A petit genre or genre painting depicts aspects of everyday life by portraying people engaged in common activities. Such representations may be imagined by the artist. One common definition of a petit genre is that it shows figures to whom no identity can be attached either individually or collectively. This distinguishing petit genre from grande genre (e.g. portraits and history paintings) and placing it in the lower ranks of the hierarchy of genres. The generally small scale of petit genre is appropriate for display in homes of middle class purchasers.
